Champions Trophy gets green light in Pakistan but India stance remains unclear

Recent ICC discussions in Dubai have brought encouraging news for Pakistan’s hosting of the 2025 Champions Trophy, with most participating nations giving their full backing to the tournament scheduled for 19 February to 9 March 2025. The positive response from cricket-playing nations marks a significant step forward for Pakistan cricket.

Global Cricket Community Shows Confidence

All participating nations, except India, have confirmed their attendance at the prestigious tournament. The Pakistan Cricket Board’s extensive preparations and security arrangements have received widespread approval during the ICC meeting. This backing from international teams highlights the growing trust in Pakistan’s ability to host major cricket events.

India’s Stance Creates Uncertainty

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) maintains its position that government clearance is necessary before committing to participate in Pakistan. This situation mirrors the 2023 Asia Cup scenario, where India opted for a hybrid model, playing their matches in Sri Lanka while other games continued in Pakistan.

Tournament Planning and Venues

The ICC has yet to release the final tournament schedule due to ongoing discussions about India’s participation. According to draft plans, matches will be hosted across three major cities – Lahore, Karachi, and Rawalpindi. This will be Pakistan’s first ICC tournament since co-hosting the 1996 ODI World Cup.

Cricket Diplomacy

The last time India played in Pakistan was during the 2008 Asia Cup, where they finished second. Bilateral cricket between the two nations has been minimal, with the most recent series occurring in 2013 when Pakistan visited India. A recent diplomatic development saw Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar visiting Pakistan for the SCO summit, receiving warm hospitality, though its impact on cricket relations remains to be seen.

The coming weeks will be crucial for finalising arrangements and determining India’s participation in what could be a landmark tournament for Pakistan cricket.
