After nearly two decades of hiatus, the cricketing world is abuzz with the possibility of India and Pakistan rekindling their sporting relationship. The Indian cricket team is likely to travel to Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, a development that has been facilitated by recent diplomatic efforts.
The groundwork for this potential reunion was laid during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, where India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Muhammad Ishaq Dar, engaged in informal discussions. These talks, which also involved insights from Pakistan’s Interior Minister and Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Mohsin Naqvi, marked a significant step forward since the last face-to-face meetings on cricketing ties in 2015.

To alleviate India’s security concerns, the PCB has proposed hosting India’s group stage matches of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Lahore. This arrangement would allow the Indian team to return to their base after each game, mitigating logistical and security worries. However, broadcasters are advocating for matches to be held in additional venues such as Rawalpindi, which complicates the planning and security arrangements.
If this plan comes to fruition, it will be the first time the Indian cricket team visits Pakistan since 2007. Despite these positive signs, deep-seated political and security issues between the two nations remain a substantial hurdle. Both India and Pakistan have packed international cricket schedules, making it challenging to arrange a bilateral series before the Champions Trophy.

Currently, India is engaged in a three-match Test series against New Zealand in Bengaluru as part of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25. Meanwhile, Pakistan is hosting England in a three-match Test series at home, also part of the WTC.
The resumption of cricketing ties could have far-reaching implications for bilateral relations between India and Pakistan. The discussions during the SCO summit indicate a willingness to engage in dialogue, which could pave the way for more cooperative endeavors in the future.

This development not only brings joy to cricket enthusiasts but also hints at a broader thaw in relations between two countries with a rich history of rivalry and passion for the sport.
