Washington Sundar sees himself as top order batter after 152 runs vs Delhi

Washington Sundar has ended a seven-year wait for his second First-Class century, scoring 152 runs at number three against Delhi in the Ranji Trophy. This performance has highlighted his potential as a top-order batsman in the red-ball format.

A Long-Awaited Century

Sundar’s century came after a prolonged gap, which was not due to his form but rather a reflection of his multiple commitments and batting positions for Tamil Nadu and India. Often, he has had to settle for a spot in the lower order simply because of his classification as a spin-bowling all-rounder. Notably, he was stranded on 96 after coming in at number eight in his last Test innings against England in 2021.

The decision to bat Sundar at number three was made by the management, and he is grateful for the opportunity. “It was a decision by the management, and I’m grateful for the opportunity. I knew it was going to be a good opportunity for me to bat at No. 3,” Sundar said after the match. This decision allowed him to set the tone for his team’s innings, providing a solid foundation that proved invaluable.
