Ravichandran Ashwin has thrown his weight behind Joe Root’s inclusion in England’s squad for the 2026 T20 World Cup in India. The veteran Indian spinner pointed to Root’s recent performances in the SA20 league and his proven ability to tackle spin bowling, a skill England has struggled with during their ongoing T20I series against India.
England’s Struggles Against Spin
England’s difficulties against spin have been laid bare in the current T20I series. In the third match at Rajkot, the visitors crumbled from a strong position of 83-1 to 127-8, with Varun Chakravarthy wreaking havoc by claiming 5-24. Axar Patel and Ravi Bishnoi also played key roles in dismantling England’s batting line-up, as the team eventually managed a total of 171-9.

This collapse was not an isolated incident. In the first T20I, England were bowled out for a modest 132, with Indian spinners accounting for seven of the wickets. The second match saw a similar story unfold, as England struggled to post 165-9. Across the three matches, Indian spinners have dominated, taking 18 wickets at an average of 16.27 while conceding just 7.51 runs per over.
Joe Root’s T20 Form and Record in India
Joe Root’s recent performances in the 2025 SA20 league have reignited interest in his T20 capabilities. Representing the Paarl Royals, Root has been in fine form, amassing 279 runs at an impressive average of 55.80 and a strike rate of 140. His standout innings include unbeaten knocks of 92 and 78, making him the second-highest run-scorer in the tournament.
Root’s record in India further bolsters his case for a T20 World Cup spot. In 13 T20 matches played in the country, he has scored 385 runs at an average of 48.12 and a strike rate of 125.81. His ability to handle spin is well-documented, with averages of 45.42 in Tests and 40.78 in ODIs played in India. Additionally, Root’s versatility was on display during the 2016 T20 World Cup final, where he opened the bowling and dismissed both West Indian openers.

Ashwin’s Endorsement
Ashwin, who shared the dressing room with Root during their time at the Rajasthan Royals in 2023, took to social media to highlight the English batter’s recent form. Sharing a tweet that detailed Root’s scores in the SA20 league, Ashwin described it as “the most pertinent” statement in light of England’s ongoing struggles against spin.
With the 2026 T20 World Cup set to be held in India, Ashwin’s endorsement has sparked conversations about Root’s potential return to England’s T20 setup. His experience, current form, and ability to counter spin could make him a crucial addition to England’s squad as they look to address their weaknesses in subcontinental conditions.
