In Pune, Sri Lanka’s run of consecutive World Cup fifties, led by opener Pathum Nissanka, ended as he managed just 46 runs against Afghanistan on Monday. Despite promising starts from Nissanka (46), Kusal Mendis (39), and Sadeera Samarawickrama (36), they couldn’t capitalize. However, late contributions from Mahesh Theekshana (29) and Angelo Mathews (23) provided a valuable 45-run partnership for the eighth wicket. Sri Lanka scored a total of 241 runs.

In the second innings, Afghanistan got off to a promising start despite an early dismissal, with Rahmat Shah showcasing a brilliant display by scoring an impressive 62 runs. Furthermore, the team secured a remarkable victory, with Azmatullah Omarzai and captain Hashmatullah Shahidi’s outstanding performance guiding them to a seven-wicket win.

Both teams find themselves in a critical must-win scenario to maintain their chances of reaching the semi-finals. Afghanistan has displayed a good performance in the tournament thus far, emerging victorious in 3 out of their six matches. In contrast, Sri Lanka has faced challenges in maintaining consistency, with two wins and four losses on their record.
