ICC ODI World Cup 2023: Injury Reports And Squads Of All Teams. The ICC ODI Cricket World Cup 2023 is just around the corner, with teams embarking on their preparation tours to compete in One-day Internationals worldwide. As the tournament’s commencement looms closer, the injury roster for every participating team has emerged as a significant worry.
Team India, in particular, endured a severe blow in recent months due to injuries. However, the situation showed signs of improvement when the BCCI expedited the rehabilitation process for their injured players. Nevertheless, a fresh wave of injury concerns may force them to rethink their strategy.
Injuries are not exclusive to Team India, as they have become a pressing issue for many teams crafting their strategies for the upcoming mega event. Sri Lanka and Australia have been particularly hard-hit by injuries, with several players still recuperating from significant injury setbacks.
The World Cup 2023 is slated to kick off on 5th October, with defending England facing off against New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad. India will face Australia in their first match of the tournament at Chennai on October 8.
Injury Report For All Teams Ahead Of ICC ODI World Cup 2023
India – Shreyas Iyer & Axar Patel :
Indian middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer was sidelined from cricket for approximately 5-6 months due to a back injury. He made his return during the Asia Cup 2023, participating in two league matches against Pakistan and Nepal. However, during the Super 4 round, Iyer once again experienced back spasms and was unable to play. Tilak Varma is on standby in case Iyer is unable to participate in the World Cup 2023.
Indian spin-bowling all-rounder Axar Patel encountered several niggling injuries during the Super 4 game against Bangladesh in the Asia Cup 2023. These injuries are expected to prevent Patel from participating in the Asia Cup final, and as a precaution, the Indian team has summoned Washington Sundar as his replacement.
While Axar Patel is a part of the Indian squad for the World Cup 2023, his injuries have raised concerns regarding India’s spin bowling department for the upcoming tournament.
Pakistan –Naseem Shah & Haris Rauf
Pakistan’s fast bowler, Naseem Shah, had to be replaced by Zaman Khan in the playing XI for Pakistan’s virtual semifinal against Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup 2023. Naseem sustained a right shoulder injury during a match against India in the Super 4 round.
Reports suggest that Naseem Shah is likely to miss the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in India, which would be a significant setback for the Pakistani team.
Pakistan’s fast bowler, Haris Rauf, suffered an injury similar to Naseem Shah’s during a match against India in the Super 4 round of the Asia Cup 2023. As a result, Pakistan had to field their team without both Naseem Shah and Cameron Haris Rauf in the match against Sri Lanka.
Rauf’s injury is related to a side strain, and fans are eagerly awaiting the final update on his participation in the World Cup. Pakistan’s hopes of having their pace trio play together in the World Cup now appear uncertain due to these injury concerns.
New Zealand–Tim Southee
New Zealand fast bowler Tim Southee bowled only four overs during the 4th ODI against England before sustaining a thumb fracture while attempting a catch on the field. Southee was also unable to bat due to the injury.
This setback has become a major cause for concern for the New Zealand team, as they remain uncertain about Kane Williamson’s availability for the opening game against England in Ahmedabad. An update on Tim Southee’s status for the World Cup is eagerly awaited.
Australia Travis Head
Australian left-handed batsman Travis Head suffered a left-hand fracture during the recently concluded 4th ODI against South Africa after being struck by a short ball from Gerald Coetzee. This injury adds to the woes of the Australian team, as several of their key players are still recuperating from various injuries.
The Australian camp is eagerly awaiting a definitive timeline for Head’s recovery. Notably, players like Cummins, Smith, Starc, and Maxwell are already in the rehabilitation process, compounding Australia’s injury concerns.
Sri Lanka –Maheesh Theekshana
Sri Lankan off-spinner Maheesh Theekshana has been ruled out of the Asia Cup final against India scheduled for Sunday. Theekshana sustained a hamstring strain during Sri Lanka’s last Super Four match in the Asia Cup 2023 against Pakistan. He will be replaced by batting all-rounder Sahan Arachchige in the squad for the final.
Theekshana adds to the growing list of injured Sri Lankan players, which includes Dushmanth Chameera, Wanindu Hasaranga, Avishka Fernando, and Lahiru Kumara.
